Visitors Temporarily Allowed to Apply for Work Permits Without Leaving Canada

The Canadian government announced a temporary change designed to help Canadian employers who are having difficulties hiring workers.

This change takes immediate effect and applies to visitors who are currently in the country and have valid job offers. These applicants will be able to receive work permits without having to leave Canada.

To be eligible, applicants must have valid status in Canada as a visitor on August 24, 2020 and remain in Canada. Applicants must also have a job offer and submit an employer-specific work permit application by March 31, 2020. The work permit application must be supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or an LMIA-exempt offer of employment.

Any visitor who meets the program criteria can apply including super visa holders, business visitors, and Global Skills Strategy work permit exemption holders. Visitors who arrive in Canada after August 24, 2020 are not eligible to apply for this temporary measure.
