Asylum Claimants Working in Health Care Offered Chance at Permanent Residency

The Canadian government announced a plan to offer asylum claimants working in the health care industry the opportunity to apply for permanent residency.

The temporary measure allows for in-Canada family members of the applicant to be included and granted permanent residency, should the application be approved.

To qualify for this proposal, asylum applicants must work directly with patients in health-care institutions. Asylum applicants working as nurses, nurses’ aides and patient service associates, assistant orderlies, and certain home support workers are eligible to apply.

In addition, applicants must meet certain criteria, which includes claiming asylum before March 13, 2020 and received a work permit after making their claim. Applicants must have worked at least 120 in their health care occupation between March 13, 2020 and August 14, 2020 and acquire six months of work experience in their eligible health care profession before August 31, 2021.
