Canadian Borders Closed to Most Foreign Travellers

In order to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, Canadian borders will be closed to most foreign travellers.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the decision on Monday, describing the situation as “exceptional circumstances calling for exceptional measures.” Effective Wednesday, borders will be closed to people who are not permanent residents of Canada or Canadian citizens.

Exceptions will be made for diplomats, air crews, immediate family and U.S. citizens. Anyone showing coronavirus symptoms will also be denied admittance on planes.

Canadian travellers waiting to return home or trying to return to Canada are eligible for financial assistance. Under the Emergency Loan Program for Canadians Abroad, Canadians abroad can apply for loans up to $5,000 to return home. More support will be available from local partnerships and consular services.

Only four airports will now receive international flights from the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean. These are Pearson International Airport in Toronto, Vancouver International Airport, Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport and Calgary International Airport. All airports will have enhanced security measures and Canada Border Services agents will be on the watch for anyone with symptoms.

Trudeau urged all Canadians abroad to come home, and all those in Canada to stay at home as much as possible.
