Canadian Government Announces New Immigration Targets

On October 30, 2020, IRCC announced plans to increase Canada’s immigration targets over the next three years as a response to the shortfalls created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government’s plan calls for increasing targets by 50,000 permanent residents in 2021 and 2022 when compared to earlier plans. In 2023, the government aims to bring 421,000 newcomers to Canada, or 1 per cent of Canada’s population.

The announcement highlighted several components of the plan including a commitment to accept 500 refugees through the Economic Mobility Pathways Project, additional Express Entry points for French-speakers, and a focus on Economic Growth by accepting most admissions through the Economic Class.
