Changes to the AINP and Temporary Foreign Workers Program in Alberta

The Alberta government recently announced changes to the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP).

On October 26, Alberta launched a new entrepreneurial pathway called International Graduate Entrepreneur Immigration Stream, which allows international graduates of Alberta post-secondary schools a chance to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for proposed new business or to purchase existing Alberta businesses.

In January, Alberta will launch an additional entrepreneurial stream called the Foreign Graduate Start-up Visa Stream. The aim of this stream is to attract skilled international graduates from US universities who wish to start businesses and settle in Alberta.

The province has also announced significant changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program that take effect on November 1, 2020. Alberta has added many occupational categories to the “refusal to process list” in sectors such as accommodation, food services, retail trade, transportation, construction, and professional, scientific, and technical services. The move affects 475 occupations in total.
