Church Group Reunites Syrian Family in Canada

A Syrian family is reunited in Toronto with the help of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church.

The Lufti-Mrza family fled their home in 2013 after the civil war broke out in Syria. After two years in Jordan, they left for Turkey. Following some delays with their sponsorship, they connected with their sponsors at a Canadian embassy in Turkey.

In 2016, a volunteer group at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Bowmanville, Ontario sponsored the family. The group arranged for housing, employment and English language education.

However, it turned out the Lufti-Mrza family wouldn’t be able to come to Canada. The volunteers then decided to reunite a refugee family in Canada. Coincidentally, the new family they selected in 2018 was related to the Lufti-Mraza family, giving the latter a path forward.

Over the next year, the volunteers filed paperwork, raised funds, found a rental house, donated furniture and grocery gift cards to help make the family’s transition easier. After the long delay, the volunteers met the refugees’ extended family at Pearson airport.
