Federal Government Introduces New Rules for Post-Grad Work Permit Eligibility for Online Programs

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced changes for international students whose study plans have been affected by COVID-19.

The changes provide greater flexibility for students’ post-graduation work permit program eligibility.

The new measures allow students to study online from outside Canada until April 30, 2021 with no deductions to the length of a future post-graduation work permit. Students graduating from multiple eligible programs may combine their program lengths when applying for a post-graduation work permit. International students beginning 8 to 12-month programs from May to September 2020 may complete their studies entirely online and maintain post-graduation work permit eligibility. All changes are subject to additional eligibility requirements.

The new measures apply to students who must or want to start their Canadian study program online from outside Canada. To be eligible, students must have sent study permit applications before beginning a program of study in the spring, summer, or fall 2020 semesters. Students beginning study programs in the January 2021 semester are also eligible.
