Gender Neutral Passport ID Now an Option

As of today, those who do not identify as either male or female can choose to have their passport, travel document, citizenship certificate or PR card labelled with “X” next to “gender.”

Those who would like to replace their identification with a gender-neutral one can do so for free until June 4, 2020. Passports and immigration identification can also be updated from “M” to “F” or “F” to “M” in the “gender” section. People whose supporting documents have the gender identifier they want will not need to fill out an application for a new ID; otherwise, applicants will need to fill out an application to get it changed.

This change is part of Canada’s commitment to respecting the gender identity of individuals. The Canadian Human Rights Act has recently been updated to include gender identity and gender expression as well. More information on updating your ID to a different gender can be found here.
