Global Skills Strategy Initiative Turns Two

Launched in 2017, the Global Skills Strategy initiative is celebrating its second anniversary today after being made a permanent program in March 2019.

Over 1,100 Canadian employers have taken advantage of the Global Talent Stream component of the initiative, which makes it easier for Canadian businesses to hire highly skilled workers from other countries.

The Stream also enables employers to issue work permits more quickly when they are bringing in highly skilled workers and exempts work permit requirements for skilled professionals working in Canada for 30 days or less. Skilled researchers are also able to conduct research in Canada for 120 days or less without needing a permit to do so.

Almost 40,000 skilled workers have come to Canada under the program, 24,000 of whom work in the tech sector.
