The City of Toronto is set to lead an initiative to help provide housing to asylum claimants and the Government of Canada will provide $17 million in funding to help.
The city will collaborate with neighbouring municipalities in the region, allowing it to receive and provide temporary shelter to asylum claimants before transferring them to a neighbouring city if there is no remaining room in Toronto shelters.
Similar arrangements have been made with the City of Hamilton and the Peel and Durham regions.
