Government Introduces Measures to Extend CEWS, Support Persons with Disabilities

The Canadian government recently announced legislation to extend the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) until December 19, 2020.

The measure was introduced to protect jobs and keep employees on employer payrolls by providing wage subsidies.

The announced changes expand CEWS funding to employers who previously did not meet the 30 per cent revenue loss threshold. The proposal also has an added subsidy of 25 per cent for employers that have been harshly affected by COVID-19.

The new legislation also includes an expansion of previously announced one-time payments to persons with disabilities. Under the terms of the amendment, 1.7 million Canadians would qualify for the payment, including persons with a valid Disabilities Tax Credit certificate, those receiving Canada Pension Plan or Quebec Pension Plan disability benefits, and those receiving disability supports from Veterans Affairs Canada.
