IRCC on Fraud Prevention Month 2022

In Canada, March is Fraud prevention Month. Fraud takes on many forms in many industries, immigration being among them.

The CICC and IRCC focus on informing the public about the ways in which they could become victims of fraud. This is a particular concern for immigrants because there are unfortunately still many unlicensed immigration consultants working illegally.

On March 1, 2022, Minister Sean Fraser made a public address about the current problem of fraudulent immigration consultants, which is considered a serious crime in Canada. He noted that the IRCC actively participates in Fraud Prevention Month each year to inform and educate the public on what to look out for, which enables newcomers to recognize, reject, and report fraud.

The Government of Canada has recently opened a new regulatory body for immigration consultants; the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants, which has the power to investigate misconduct and punish licensees. The College also runs on a high level of oversight, a cause in which the Government of Canada has invested $51.9 million.

If you are in the market for an immigration consultant, ensure you verify them to avoid being the victim of fraud.
