Immigrants Push for Online, Distanced Options for Citizenship Tests

Many immigrants are worried a growing backlog of citizenship applications will delay the citizenship process well beyond the pre-pandemic average of 12 months.

All citizenship tests, re-tests, hearings, and interviews have been cancelled since March 14, 2020 due to COVID-19. Many have not received application updates since the pandemic began.

Some applicants are pushing for secure online citizenship tests to accelerate the process. However, there are concerns about delivering secure, virtual testing and in-person, physically distanced testing is more likely. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is investigating alternative options to resume the process.

Supporters for online testing point out that IRCC now offers virtual oath-taking ceremonies. Since the beginning of the pandemic, IRCC has held 7,000 online oath ceremonies and more than 17,500 people have been sworn in as new Canadians.
