Immigrants to Play Vital Role as Canadian Population Ages

Lower than replacement level fertility rates and an increase in the standard of living have led to the accelerated aging of Canada’s population.

In 2018 the Baby Boomer generation (those born between 1946 and 1965) accounted for 17.2 per cent of the Canadian population, up from 14.4 per cent in 2011. Despite this rise, however, Canada still has the second-lowest proportion of seniors among G7 countries, with Japan topping the list at 28 per cent.

Canada aims to offset theses effects and boost its economy by allowing more newcomers into the country. Announced this past November, the government’s 2019-2021 Immigration Levels Plan will do just that, increasing admissions to 350,000 in 2021.
