International Migrants Day 2019

Social cohesion is the theme for this year’s International Migrants Day.

According to the United Nations (UN), there are currently 272 million migrants across the world. UN Secretary-General António Guterres says all migrants are entitled to equal protection of all their human rights. “On this International Day, I urge leaders and people everywhere to bring the Global Compact to life, so that migration works for all,” he added.

The UN plays a key part in fostering dialogue and collaboration among countries. Today, cooperation is necessary more than ever before to meet the challenges associated with international migration.

In addition, the International Conference to Commemorate International Migrants Day is being held in Bangkok.

Created by the UN in 2000, International Migrants Day is intended to acknowledge the positive effects of migration, convey respect for migrants’ rights and freedoms, and reinforce the importance of international cooperation.
