More Nigerian Immigrants are Choosing Canada

The number of Nigerian immigrants coming to Canada has tripled in the last five years.

This increase is being driven by immigration programs aimed at skilled workers; 12,595 of the permanent resident permits issued in 2019 were to immigrants from Nigeria.

Nigeria now has the highest rate of extreme poverty globally, and ongoing economic insecurity has left little hope for change. Canada’s skilled immigration programs mean that Nigerians who can afford to relocate have access to better standards of living. The opportunities provided by Canada’s education standards are particularly enticing for families with children. For Canada, increased immigration means a younger population and an expanded labour force.

There has been some controversy about illegal border crossings in upstate New York causing a backlog of refugee claims in Canada. Most pending refugee claims were from Nigeria as of September 2019.

Canada’s welcoming immigration policy contrasts with Brexit and the recent U.S. ban on Nigerian immigration visas. Canada accepted a total of 341,000 immigrants in 2019 and is projected to welcome almost 700,000 over the next two years.
