In a statement released on Canada Day, Ahmed Hussen wished the nation a “Happy Canada Day” and announced that 1,800 newcomers would receive their citizenship in ceremonies across the country.
One of the ceremonies, hosted by the Institute for Canadian Citizenship, was held in Skmaqn-Port-la-Joye-Fort Amherst, Prince Edward Island, and welcomed 29 new Canadians from 14 different countries, sworn in by judge Joan Mahoney. One of the new citizens, Shao Ching “Nicole” Tseng, told The Guardian P.E.I., “Since I arrived in Canada, I was embraced by people and Canadian friends. They’re very welcoming, respectful and very grateful of the things they have.”
Another ceremony in Chatham, Ontario had 300 people in attendance. Hosted by the Chatham-Kent Local Immigration Partnership, the event saw 41 people sworn into the country, with Mayor Darrin Canniff, MP Dave Van Kesteren, and MPP Rick Nicholls in attendance. In summary of the events, Hussen’s statment ended on the importance of immigration in Canada: “When newcomers become Canadian, our whole country is enriched. We know from decades of experience that communities are better and stronger through diversity.”
