Ottawa Ad Warns Indian Citizens about Unethical Immigration Consulting Practices

An ad campaign targeted at Indian citizens is spreading the word about unethical immigration consultants, to minimize the effects these exploitative practices are having on prospective immigrants.

Although immigration consultants are required to have a license with the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council, many who do not have the license are still conducting business as consultants, some charging steep fees for bad advice, such as telling newcomers to fill out multiple paper applications with the same information.

Recent new regulations announced by Minister Ahmed Hussen in the spring were a new addition to the Canadian government’s longstanding efforts to regulate immigration consultants, with a new self-regulatory body which will be able to enforce the standards of the profession. Some immigration consultants expressed concern that the ad was fearmongering, stressing the benefits of using a licensed immigration consultant. The ad is currently posted on Facebook and Google in India, and on the radio in English, French, Punjabi, and Hindi.
