Project Helps Newcomers with Social, Cultural, and Mental Health Issues

The Opening Doors Project and The Multicultural Association of Perth Huron will help newcomers and service providers address the social, cultural, and mental health issues.

The Opening Doors Project initially gave a presentation at the Local Immigration Partnership’s annual conference in Stratford after being invited by multicultural association founder Dr. Gezaghn (Geza) Wordofa. However, the two organizations will continue the discussion in a two-day conference open to the public, in which The Opening Doors Project will present its six workshops centered around understanding the mental health and wellness challenges that come with migration.

With topics such as racism, human rights, and identity up for discussion, the workshops will help service providers create inclusive spaces while helping newcomers navigate their new environment.

An additional component of the workshops is Know Your Rights 101, designed to help newcomers be aware of their rights at home, in public, and in employment settings. The conferences have been made possible with funding from the IRCC.
