Protecting Newcomers from Unauthorized Immigration Practitioners

The Canadian government is proposing to invest in strengthening consumer protection against unauthorized immigration practitioners.

The government has proposed $51.9 million in funding over the next five years, beginning in 2019, to support public awareness campaigns and bolster regulatory enforcement and disciplinary power, ensuring the fair and ethical treatment of newcomers seeking advice. A further $10.1 million in annual funding for these measures has been proposed on an ongoing basis.

Moreover, a proposed Border Enforcement Strategy will also be introduced as a comprehensive method for processing asylum claims, as a growing number of asylum seekers continues to be an ongoing challenge to the effectiveness of Canada’s asylum system. Budget 2019 has proposed funding of 1.18 billion over five years to implement this process, helping law enforcement and the justice system process asylum claims more efficiently.
