Starting January 1, newcomers immigrating to Quebec are required to pass the province’s “values test.”
Known as Bill-9, the values test questions newcomers about secularism, same-sex marriage, gender rights, religious symbols and other areas of Quebec culture. Prospective immigrants must take the test in a two-year period before applying for residency.
The test includes 20 multiple choice and true or false questions. Test takers are given 90 minutes to complete the test and must score at least 75 per cent to pass.
Because they fall under federal jurisdiction, refugees and newcomers arriving through family reunification programs are not required to take the test.
