Saskatchewan seeks greater control over immigration

The prairies province is in contact with federal officials to get an immigration arrangement like Quebec.

Saskatchewan Immigration Minister Jeremy Harrison discussed immigration and other topics with Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland.

Harrison has also spoken with the federal immigration and employment ministers who he said were receptive to Saskatchewan’s ideas. However, Saskatchewan has not yet presented a formal proposal to the feds.

Currently, an immigrant nominee program gives the province some control over immigration.

Quebec’s arrangement allows that province to select its own immigrants, while the federal government is responsible for admitting selected individuals.

According to Harrison, provinces are better positioned to understand their own labour markets.

Harrison also discussed the carbon tax and trade with Freeland.
