Senate Adopts Changes to Oath of Citizenship

On June 8, Canada’s Senate adopted Bill C-8, An Act to amend the Citizenship Act (Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's call to action number 94).

The Bill amends the Citizenship Act to include a commitment to respect the treaty rights of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples when individuals take an Oath or Affirmation of Citizenship. The change was in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s call to action number 94.

The bill was sponsored by the Honourable Marco Mendicino, P.C., M.P., Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.
