After being stuck for seven months in a Kuala Lumpur airport, before being detained for two months in Malaysia, a Syrian refugee has finally arrived in Canada.
Hassan al Kontar described his first hours in the country as “overwhelming,” but was finally able to feel safe after losing his work permit abroad. A group of Canadian volunteers helped him fight for his human rights and settle in Vancouver.
Hassan stayed optimistic throughout the ordeal, documenting his ordeal on social media to help spread awareness about the struggles of refugees. He now has a job offer at a hotel, and although he has legal training, he says that the work is a “blessing.”
