Fewer Asylum Seekers Are Crossing into Canada

The first half of 2019 saw fewer refugees crossing the US-Canada border into Canada than in the same period of 2018.

Although some claim that the number of “irregular” asylum seekers is rising, this might stem from a slight uptick in asylum seekers in June 2019, which was slightly higher than June of last year and a significant increase from last month, with 371 more migrants attempting to cross the border illegally than in May.

The overall trend, however, is a gradual decline — 6,707 asylum seekers entered Canada illegally from January to June this year, a 38% decrease from the same period last year.
