Newfoundland and Labrador Will Soon Depend on Immigration

An aging workforce combined with out-migration will leave 65,000 job vacancies in Newfoundland and Labrador by 2025, according to a recent study.

Although immigration is vital for every province, it will become increasingly important for Newfoundland and Labrador, which already has Canada’s lowest fertility rate and highest median age.

Labour shortages are expected to cut across all sectors and the implications of the changing population will affect the province’s ability to provide basic services, unless it can accept enough immigrants.

The province has several options for attracting newcomers, such as the Provincial Nominee Program, Atlantic Immigration Pilot, and a five-year action plan called “The Way Forward,” which aims to increase the number of newcomers to 1,700 per year.
