P.E.I. Set to Achieve Population Goals Early

In 2017, Prince Edward Island made an action plan to increase its population to 160,000 by 2022, a target it’s now set to meet by late 2021.

With a growth rate of 2.2 per cent over the past two years, P.E.I. is the fastest-growing province in the country, with immigration a significant factor.

Last year there were more deaths than births in the province, but the influx of new immigrants has more than made up for it, with over 2,000 immigrants arriving in the province per year over the past four.

Retaining immigrants hasn’t always been easy, as only 77 per cent of immigrants in the Atlantic growth strategy pilot project stayed in the province. Still, immigrants are filling gaps in the labour market, helping to grow the domestic workforce by 3.1 per cent last year.
