Additional Funding Given to Women’s Centres Across Canada

Part of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s pilot project supporting newcomer women involves allocating additional funding to groups offering services to help this vulnerable demographic.

IRCC will provide $7 million in funding for new programs that do not currently have funding, and $5 million in funding for existing programs to expand their services according to the goals of the pilot project.

In St. John’s, Newfoundland, the Association for New Canadians has been offered an additional $290,000 in funding to increase their services, while the Conseil économique du Nouveau-Brunswick inc. in Moncton, New Brunswick, will receive $270,000 in funding over the next three years.

In Ontario, the Rexdale Women’s Centre of Etobicoke and the Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor are both set to receive an increase of $310,000, as will the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers in Alberta. The Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association, also in Alberta, will receive $365,000.

Newcomer women have the lowest median annual income of all immigrant groups. As such, the Canadian government has outlined specific strategies that are necessary to help alleviate their struggles.
