A Look at Canada’s Q3 Job Vacancy Stats

The third quarter of 2018 represents the peak of a steady, two-year increase in job vacancies in all of Canada’s provinces, most notably in Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia.

The number of vacancies for full-time versus part-time work varied greatly by sector, as most managerial vacancies in the fishing, manufacturing, and mining industries were for full-time positions, while vacancies for retail sales, athletes, and coaches were mostly part-time.

The proportion of permanent and temporary jobs also varied depending on type. For example, most jobs for butchers, bakers, and forestry management were permanent, while most jobs for university professors, landscaping, and primary and secondary school teachers were temporary.

63.3 per cent of all vacancies required a high school diploma or less, whereas only 11.7 per cent required a bachelor’s degree or more. The average wage for jobs requiring no education was $16.10 per hour, compared to $41.75 for jobs requiring certification beyond a bachelor’s degree.
