Avoid Common Scams Targeting Newcomers to Canada

Internet, email, text, and telephone scams are common fraud and theft techniques. However, some scams target newcomers to Canada specifically.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has helpful tips to protect yourself against such schemes.

IRCC reminds the public that scam perpetrators sometimes pose as government staff. In reality, legitimate government officials will never call you to collect fees or fines or threaten you in any way.

Email is another common technique employed by scammers. Be wary of emails that are from unrecognized senders, ask for personal information, or ask for passwords. Do not click on links from unrecognized senders.

Some scammers try to entice you by promising fake prizes or warning you about fake computer viruses.  Never reply to scam texts, as replies confirm the scammer has reach a real number. Use up-to-date antivirus software and only use trusted professionals for computer maintenance.
