Budget 2021 Outlines Immigration’s Role in Post-Pandemic Recovery

On April 19, Canada’s Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland, tabled the country’s first budget in more than two years. Included was a path to economic recovery identifying two key priority phases.

The first phase, “Securing the Recovery” calls for an increase in government spending to ensure a quick and long-term recovery, including increasing employment and income levels.

The second phase, “Build a Stronger Economy” involves a shift in economic priorities to encourage innovation and greater participation in the labour force. This phase emphasizes the role immigration will play in the country’s rebound, including recent announcements to increase processing capacity for the Caregiver program and new permanent resident pathways for 90,000 essential temporary workers and recent international graduates.

Announcements such as a new national childcare plan and a new climate plan prioritizing green energy are among the highlights designed to help newcomers and the economy alike.
