Canada’s Express Entry System Will Target 82 Jobs This Summer

Express Entry will transition towards category-based selection to strengthen Canada’s labour market needs.

A major change is coming to Canada’s Express Entry System that will allow Canada to issue invitations on an occupation basis. Previously, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conducted Express Entry draws and program specific draws to invite candidates with the highest Comprehensive Ranking Score (CRS) to apply for permanent residency.

However, the occupations that will be targeted under new Express Entry Draws will include Healthcare, STEM, Trades, Transport, and Agriculture and Agri-Food. This new initiative will require candidates to have at least six months of continuous work experience in Canada or abroad within the past three years in one of these occupations. The categories are selected based on stakeholders’ input which includes territories, members of industry unions, employers, workers, worker advocacy groups, settlement provider organizations and immigration researchers and practitioners.

This new system can cause more uncertainty to candidates whose occupations don’t belong to the six categories. However, by selecting immigrants with particular qualifications this new approach will help Canada address current labour market needs and improve Canada’s economic goals.
