Canada Allows Work Permit Holders to Study Without a Study Permit

Foreign workers in Canada with an eligible work permit may now study without applying for a study permit.

Canada understands the important role temporary foreign workers play in strengthening the country’s economic growth. It also acknowledges the barriers workers face while seeking their educational goals in the country to grab new opportunities. To ease these challenges, Canada has announced a new temporary public policy that will allow eligible work permit holders in the country to study for a longer duration without needing a study permit.

The Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations granted work permit holders in Canada to study and work simultaneously if the study program is six months or less and can be completed before the expiry of the work permit. If foreign workers wanted to study for a longer education, they had to apply for a separate study permit. The recently announced policy grants an exemption for this requirement, allowing work permit holders to improve their skills and knowledge, by receiving more education without having to be worried about applying for a study permit.

This temporary policy is valid for 3 years until the expiration of the policy on June 27, 2026, but it can be revoked by the Minister before its expiry.
