Canada Holds First-Ever Express Entry Invitations for Newcomers with Experience in the Trades

New Pathway for trade workers opened in Canada’s recent Express Entry draw.

The Honourable Marc Miller, the new Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, recently announced the first trades round for category-based selection which will open to prioritize skilled newcomers with experience in the trades. Candidates with trade expertise will help Canada’s construction sector attract the skilled talent it needs in areas such as carpentry, plumbing and welding.

The launch of category-based selection was first announced on May 31, 2023, by the Honourable Sean Fraser, previous Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, to help support labour shortages and fill key positions contributing to Canada’s growth and advancement.

Minister Miller says, “It’s absolutely critical to address the shortage of skilled trades workers in our country, and part of the solution is helping the construction sector find and maintain the workers it needs. This round of category-based selection recognizes these skilled trades workers as essential, and I look forward to welcoming more of these talented individuals to Canada.”
