Canada Improves Accountability for Immigration Consultants

New measures to protect vulnerable immigrants and refugees from exploitative immigration consultants are under way, per the Budget 2019 plan.

A new regulatory body, the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants, will oversee immigration consulting businesses and investigate complaints of fraudulent practice within the field.

The College will also have the authority to penalize and take legal action against consultants found to be taking advantage of newcomers and investigate the premises of businesses and issue court injunctions when necessary.

The measures have come after longstanding issues with some immigration consultants highlighted a need for tougher legal standards in the industry.
