Canada Launches New Pathway to Permanent Residency for Ukrainians

The Federal government announces a new pathway effective this October that will allow Ukrainians in Canada to apply for permanent residency.

Canada announces a new pathway to permanent residency for Ukrainians who fled Russia’s invasion and want to stay in Canada with their families. Starting October 23, 2023, this program will allow Ukrainians with temporary resident status and have at least one family member in Canada to apply for permanent residency.  More information will be available in October, closer to the launch of the program.

This announcement comes after the federal government officially closed applications for the temporary emergency visas offered to Ukrainians fleeing Russian aggression. Under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization Emergency Travel (CUAET), which was launched in March of last year, temporary refuge was provided to more than 166,000 Ukrainians. They benefited from a variety of measures through this visa program including applying for an open work permit to work or for a study permit to study and accessing settlement services for up to three years. Ukrainians with a CUAET visa already in Canada have until March 31, 2024, to extend or change their temporary status in the country.
