Canada Launches New Process to Address Labour Needs and Welcome Skilled Newcomers in Priority Jobs

Skilled foreign nationals in targeted categories will be selected for permanent residence through the Express Entry system to meet Canada’s labour needs.

The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship has announced the first ever launch of category-based selection for Canada’s flagship economic immigration management system, Express Entry.

This new tool allows Canada to issue invitations to immigration applicants with specific skills, training, or language ability. Category-based selection will focus on candidates with strong French language proficiency, as well as those with a background in five key occupational sectors: healthcare, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions, trades, transport and agriculture/agri-food.

Minister Fraser says, “Everywhere I go, I’ve heard loud and clear from employers across the country who are experiencing chronic labour shortages. These changes to the Express Entry system will ensure that they have the skilled workers they need to grow and succeed.”

Category based selection ensures the vitality of French speaking communities by placing a special focus on Francophone immigration. It makes Express Entry more responsive to Canada’s labour needs while also supporting Canada’s commitment to welcoming in-demand professionals into communities across the country.
