Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has published some common scams aimed at newcomers and tips to avoid them.

Newcomers in Canada often become victims of immigration fraud and scams as they are new to the country and may not be aware about how companies and government work. IRCC has recently released an advisory to educate newcomers about the common scams and what can be done to prevent them.

According to the guidelines, IRCC will never contact over the telephone to pay fees or fines, threaten to arrest, or deport you, ask for personal or financial information over the phone, or send police to arrest for unpaid fees.

Other common scams include receiving a fake email or a call that tries to convince you to invest money or directs you to an unsecured website. You may also get a phone call or email saying that your computer has been infected with a virus and send an offer to remove the virus from your computer.

IRCC advises  to delete such emails, not to click on any links or give any information about yourself. If you get a text message from a stranger, and it directs you to a form that asks you to enter any personal information, delete the text. Do not enter any information.
