Canada-U.S. Border Closing due to Coronavirus

The Canada-U.S. border is closing to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The closure will stop nonessential travel between Canada and the United States. Essential workers will be allowed across the border, and trade and commerce will not be affected.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also announced $82 billion in financial help and economic stimulus. Some of the measures implemented will be deferring the tax deadline, increasing the Canada Child Benefit and other targeted assistance. There will be a $27 billion budget for direct assistance to workers and families, and $55 billion to help businesses.

The $27 billion will include a $900 bi-weekly emergency care benefit for those without paid sick leave; $5 billion will go toward a support fund for workers facing unemployment.

People will be able to access EI immediately and without a doctor’s note.

The deadline to file taxes will be delayed until June 1.

A 10% wage subsidy will be offered to small businesses for 90 days, and lenders will be able to defer mortgage payments.

Other groups receiving support will include the homeless, seniors, students, indigenous people and domestic violence survivors. Businesses will also benefit from deferred taxes, additional credit and government purchase of mortgage pools.
