Document Fraud: What Is It and How Is It Prevented?

IRCC is reminding the public that providing false information or documents to IRCC is a serious crime known as “misrepresentation”.

Misrepresentation can include altered or fake documents such as passports, diplomas, and birth certificates. Misrepresentation also encompasses providing false information on applications or interviews with immigration offices.

CBSA and RCMP officers work with international partners to prevent document fraud and biometrics requirements have been introduced to reduce identity fraud.

The penalties for individuals who provide false information or documents as part of their applications is steep and includes criminal charges, losing Canadian permanent residence or citizenship status, and removal from Canada.
