Francophone Immigration in Canada: A Rich History

In honour of #FrancophonieMonth, we are looking back over the rich history of Francophone immigration to Canada.

Beginning in the 17th century, Francophone immigration to Canada has enriched the culture and identity of both the Quebec and the rest of the country.

Since that time, Francophones have been attracted to Canada as a destination for religious, agricultural, and economic reasons. After World War II, the Canadian government embraced French-speaking European immigrants and in the 1960s, with the development of multiculturalism as an official policy, welcomed French-speaking professionals from around the world.

Today, Francophone immigration in Canada is boosted by the Official Languages Act and the Refugee Protection Act. Francophone newcomers are welcomed to Francophone communities across the country through settlement programs, community organizations, and workplace associations.
