Free Replacement Documents for Canadians and Special Measures for People Affected by Flooding in Nova Scotia

The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship announces special measures for people impacted by flooding in Nova Scotia

As Nova Scotia experiences severe flooding, Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced free replacement documents for Canadians, permanent residents and temporary residents in Nova Scotia directly impacted by the flooding. These replacement documents include permanent resident cards, proof of citizenship, Canadian citizenship certificates, Canadian passports and other travel documents that are lost, damaged, destroyed or inaccessible.

IRCC will also extend or restore the status free of charge for international students, temporary foreign workers and other visitors directly affected by the natural disaster whose status will expire before November 30, 2023. The measures ensure  temporary workers unable to work because their workplace is closed due to the floods will be able to extend their status and stay in Canada until their workplace reopens.

Minister Fraser says, “My Department is introducing these new measures to make it easier for Canadians, permanent residents and temporary residents to replace lost documents. They will also help make sure temporary residents are not unduly penalized and are there to continue rebuilding our communities.” These special measures will be in effect until November 30, 2023. More information about who is eligible and how to apply will be available on IRCC’s website.
