Halifax Population Boom Due to Immigration

A record 2% population growth in Halifax helped its GDP grow by $300 million in 2018, thanks in large part to immigration.

Roughly half of the 2018 population boom was due to the influx of newcomers, increasing the number of younger people in the city and, as a result, the number of people in the labour force.

Labour force participation in the city has increased for the first time since 2009, with 8,000 more people working in Halifax. The construction industry has been doing particularly well, with $864 million in construction last year. Although down from the previous year, the numbers represent a huge spike since 2016.
