Immigration Applicants and COVID-19: Summary Guidance

The Canadian government has issued several directives about new travel protocols during the pandemic. These protocols impact immigration applicants in diverse ways.

Applicants are reminded that most non-essential travel to Canada is not allowed. Applicants with approval to travel will have to pass airline health checks and quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in Canada.

IRCC is still accepting permanent resident applications but cautions applicants that processing times have been affected by COVID-19. Processing efforts are focused on priority groups such as vulnerable people and those working in essential services.

Express Entry applicants have been granted 90 days to send Express Entry applications after being granted invitations. The government assures permanent resident applicants that no in progress application will be refused or closed if the applicant is missing documents because of COVID-19. In addition, 90-day extensions to send documents will be granted automatically.

While Service Canada has temporarily stopped collecting biometrics, appointments will be rescheduled when locations reopen. If you are sponsoring a relative, you can still collect CERB and act as a sponsor.
