Immigration Prevents Population Decline in St. John’s

An increase of 1,233 people since the 2016 census is mostly thanks to newcomers who have chosen St. John’s, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, as their permanent home.

The city had been struggling to maintain its population for several years, falling 3.6% between 2011 and 2016. And although recent growth is modest in absolute terms, the upswing is a hopeful new trend for the Maritimes town.

Immigrants constitute 91% of the growth and in recent years have made the community much more diverse than ever before. Most newcomers hail from China, but others come from Syria, Lebanon, Ukraine, and South Korea.
