International Student Applicants Who Qualify for the Student Direct Stream Continue to Get Their Study Permits Faster

Starting August 10th, the IRCC will accept additional language test results with the SDS stream applications.

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) was introduced by Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in 2018. It is a mechanism designed to expedite applications for a study permit for legal residents from 14 countries.

IRCC will now accept additional language test results for SDS applicants starting in August. Then, the accepted language tests for the SDS are International English Language Testing System (IELTs) General, Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) General, Test d’évaluation de français pour le Canada (TEF Canada), Test de connaissance du français pour le Canada (TCF Canada), International English Language Testing System (IELTs) Academic, Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test, Test d’évaluation de français (TEF) 5 épreuves, Test de connaissance du français (TCF) tout public, Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT. If applicants live anywhere else other than one of the 14 countries listed by the IRCC where they are legal residents, they must apply through the regular study permit application process.

To benefit faster processing of the SDS, eligible applicants must have an acceptance letter from a post-secondary designated learning institution (DLI) and provide proof that tuition fees for the first year of study have already been paid among other mandatory requirements. Applicants should check both the IRCC general guide and their local visa office for specific instructions when preparing their SDS applications.
