New Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino

Trudeau’s new cabinet has been sworn in with several changes—including Marco Mendicino as the new Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.

Born to Italian immigrants, Mendicino studied political science at Carleton University and law at the University of Windsor. A federal prosecutor for almost 10 years, Mendicino focused on fighting organized crime and terrorism, particularly the Toronto 18 terrorism case.

This will be Mendicino’s first role in the cabinet, having previously served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities from August 2018 to September 2019.

His prior role was as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada from January 2017 to August 2018.

Only 11 of Trudeau’s 36 cabinet ministers kept their prior portfolios. Mendicino is one of 7 rookies promoted to cabinet.

Former Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen is now the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development.
