Policy Changes could Benefit Skilled Immigrants

All workforce growth in Ontario over the next 25 years is expected to come from immigrants.

However, certain barriers hinder their success. These barriers include Canadian experience requirements and non-recognition of foreign credentials.

Such barriers negatively impact the provincial economy and newcomers’ quality of life.

Despite policy reform, newcomers are still more likely to work in jobs unrelated to their university education.

Going forward, policy should recognize credentials in both regulated and unregulated professions. A policy brief published by the “Ontario 360” project recommends changes to improve the integration and acceptance of skilled immigrants. Suggested changes include making programs more available to newcomers, using a demand-led approach to programs and improving pre-arrival services.
