Rule Changes Allow Non-Biological Parents to Pass Citizenship to Children

The Government of Canada has announced changes to its citizenship rules. As of July 2020, non-biological parents can pass their citizenship to their children who were born outside of Canada.

Non-biological parents must be recognized as the legal parent at birth for the child to be granted citizenship.

Previously, only biological parents could pass Canadian citizenship to their children. To pass citizenship to their children, non-biological parents must apply for a citizenship certificate and submit an original copy of their child’s birth certificate.
