Father and Son Accused of Smuggling Migrants

Michael Kong has been accused of seven charges for violating the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act after smuggling 34 migrants across the open US-Canada border at Peace Arch Park.

His son, also involved in the smuggling network, faces two counts for helping migrants cross the border illegally and not appearing for an examination after crossing the border.

The group of migrants, including some children, had travelled to the US with visas issued in China and attempted to claim refugee status in Etobicoke after Kong helped smuggle them across the Canadian border. Both Kong and his son have pleaded not guilty and will face trial on July 29.

The Peace Arch is a symbol of the US-Canadian alliance and is linked to a park in the US, which is why there are no border fences in the area.
